Why is my printer producing poor quality prints?

My printer was printing poor quality print, so I bought a replacement cartridge and it’s still rubbish, the new cartridge must also be faulty!”

“I don’t understand it, my printer was printing poor quality print, so I bought a replacement cartridge and it’s still rubbish, the new cartridge must also be faulty!”

J. Harper, a professional with 30 years of experience in printing ink industry, says that is is a very common comment.

“The printer probably just needs a good clean” says Jeff.

Laser printers are notorious for building up dust and toner particles inside the printer and need regular cleaning. Jeff suggests reading the users guide on how to clean, or if you have lost the manual, just switch it off and remove all the interior components like toner and drum etc then use your vacuum cleaner with the brush attachment.

For Ink Jet Printers: All inkjet printers have a self-cleaning function. Once again, refer to the users guide or check out YouTube on how to get the printer to clean it’s printheads.

“Poor quality paper is the killer” says Jeff. Buying really cheap paper is a disaster waiting to happen. Cheap paper has a very high dust content and is also very abrasive. The dust clogs up everything and the abrasive texture prematurely wears out all the moving components.

When it comes to printing business documents, paper weight, brightness and the environmental effects can be of great importance. The brighter the paper, the more vivid colours and letters will appear. This kind of paper is ideal for printing professional certificates and important documents that need to be preserved.

For printing emails and faxes, it’s recommended to use standard weight printer paper as they are the most economical and jam resistant. For double-sided printing and customer-facing documents, mid weight paper offers a smooth finish without the ‘show through’ affecting visibility. Heavy weight papers should be reserved for colour laser machines and are ideal for heavy-coverage documents and professional presentations.

And remember, never use printer papers that are physically changed (meaning already used on one side) and not flat, as they are meant to be, else you are risking paper jamming problems. Such papers damage your printer’s components if they occur too often.
